These wrapping hacks are for busy moms, by busy moms. You don’t have to be a gift-wrapping pro to recreate our easy-to-follow steps below.
Gift Bags, Stockings, and Cloth Wrapping
The simplest and easiest way to wrap baby dolls, plushies, or open-box toys and accessories is to put them in a bag, cover them in tissue paper, and call it a day. After all, as the Grinch taught us, it’s not about the packages, boxes, or bags; it’s about the spirit of the holidays. That said, you’re reading this because you’re tired of basic and boring wrapping and want to do something more special this year. So here are the easiest gift-wrapping hacks:
Use stockings at Christmas
Depending on the size of the stocking and the size of your gift, you could snuggly fit a baby doll or plushy into a stocking, and you won’t even have to worry about tissue paper. Plus, taking the toy out of the box makes it easier for your child to jump right into play during holiday time. The benefit of gifting stockings is that the stocking itself is a gift that kids can play with, and it can be reused as decoration for years to come.
Use children’s blankets or muslin cloths for Furoshiki wrapping
Every young parent has a drawer or shelf of burp cloths, swaddle blankets, receiving blankets, and muslin cloths. For holidays or birthdays use an appropriately sized blanket or cloth to wrap up your gifts, inspired by the Japanese wrapping tradition, furoshiki.
Directions:
- Place your gift in the center of the fabric so that the flat edges of the gift (if there are any) line up with the corners of the fabric (don’t place the toy so its corners line up with the blanket’s corners. You want it diagonal so each corner can fold up and cover one complete side of the gift.
- Fold the four corners in towards the center.
- Either tie all four ends, making two knots, or just one knot with the other corner flaps tucked in.
Depending on the size of the gift and the size of the fabric, you may need to experiment with folds and fabrics to see what looks best. Then, spruce it up with a bit of spruce, and you’re done.
Gift wrapping half-open box dolls
Get yourself a roll of wrapping paper, scissors, and tape because it’s time to wrap some awkwardly shaped gifts. Half-open box toys and dolls are deceptively difficult to wrap. The trick to clean wrapping is well-measured paper (don’t be afraid to cut excess off the ends), lots of tape, and wrapping that’s thin enough to fold easily.

Extra tips for a stress-free unwrapping
- Take out all ties, plastic clips, or other packaging hurdles that might prevent your child from jumping right into play. It saves you the scramble for the scissors and your child will love how they will easily be able to open their gift and immediately get to the fun.
- Keep a garbage or recycling bag close by and scoop up all the ripped paper and empty toy boxes right away to prevent little ones from getting distracted by the boxes and paper.
- If your kids struggle to unwrap presents, you can use a long piece of tape to make it easier. If you add this strip of tape while you wrap the gift, when it’s time to unwrap it, all your little one needs to do is pull the tab you created and the paper comes off effortlessly. What a quick tiktok to see what we mean.
